I think that line of thinking is a bit reductive, because you can't always know what lead to the breakup or where the people involved were in life, or currently are.

You can say "oftentimes, it didn't work before and thus it's not likely to work again", but I don't think you can reduce it to an absolute statement. Especially if you don't or can't know the whole of the context or circumstances of the relationship or the breakup--which is what we have with this series in particular.

It's not that he outright believes she does, it's just his overactive imagination giving him both the best (in the sense that she's not waiting for him despite the fact that they broke up) and worst (she has a BF despite how much he tells himself it's over) possible explanation for what he overheard.

The reason he approaches her, meanwhile, is the simple fact that he simply can't say "it's none of my business" and walk away when he hears her crying. It's called empathy and sentiment.

Still he believes it to some extent, me personally if I believe someone's in a relationship i wouldn't be jumping straight in to be there 24/7

If we predicate it on the fact she's his ex feel like saying it's simply empathy is just an excuse.
