Was it not that most of the old genderbend were just gags? A lot of the old ones has that old humor types which now that I'm saying makes sense. But anyway there were an era of spamming GB right? I remember seeing a lot of it like in 2014 or so. Then it died down (Used as a one time gag in a lot of anime and manga).

And there really is a lot of GB novels, scouring both CH and JP there is like 5k+ stories? (WN only) some actually getting serialization probably cause how popular Onimai is.

Also KR is spamming so much reincarnated as a vtuber type lol

It really depends on the era, for a while it was one off gags and boring, now we have more coming than ever. And im talking GB as a focal point or main point of a story, it was rough scouring the genre multiple times on end only to get bamboozled with some stories that had nothing to do with gb and slid it in for a gag

From the western side for stories it could be the popularity of the trans movement(which genderbender is somewhat adjacent to) boosting awareness of this genre, a little less so for japan, korea and especially china but its still there. It could also be wish fulfillment. Some people thinking it's interesting, even fetish maybe, idk it's kinda strange how it's so popular suddenly

If you want an exhaustive comparison accounting for every gender-bending manga in the last five years (besides the super-explicit ones), I can give it. Ffs, Fabiniku even got an anime a couple years ago! (Though the most common romance with gender-bent manga characters is "none".)

No slight against them but I want to see them struggling with their newfound attraction, angst, and drama over the new body they get. Most yuri gender bender is just yuri but they want to be able to self-insert/write a boy into the girl role. At least that's what I think

I can think of several where they explicitly stay or identify as female because they fell for a guy. (What do you mean by "write a boy into the girl role"?)

For reference Ore ga... Yuri!?, Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome, Orewata, Kareshi Tokidoki Kanojo, and TS Gyaru all give their protagonists some kind of internal struggle over their gender without falling in love with a guy, though I'll admit the last one's is hilariously stupid. (Special mention: The protagonist of Transjitter angsts plenty over turning into a girl despite being gay to begin with, but that series is misogynist garbage for other reasons.)

It helps that in the (non h...) examples with Romance, the Guy Option seems to often involve someone they knew all along and may have already had feelings for anyway.

I don't see many cases of "Oh I'm a girl and now I suddenly want dudes."

This actually made me go back to page 14 (sorted by date added and translated) and categorized some of the added titles since 5 years ago. Based on this it seems like that I'm actually wrong, there is actually more standard Boy x Girl Gender Bender compared to Yuri. I might have conflated it with the gender bender title novels (sorted by updates on NovelUpdates), and even then I might be wrong on that end too.
What I meant by "write a boy into the girl role" is that the girl is all but appearance, the sensibility and the norms hasn't at all changed as if they were still a boy (barring the personal space between genders). In the sense that the gender change doesn't really affect much but its there just to make it yuri

It's an often-mocked cliche for the protagonist to be romantically-oblivious, but in this case I'm genuinely glad Uesugi is that way. It lets attraction to Eito be something they can just enjoy instead of being an immediate source of sexuality/gender/relationship angst.

Most of the guys in class are still total creeps; dunno if they think they can be more obnoxious to Kei-chan specifically or the other girls are just desensitized to this crap. Although the worst part is how plausible it is for them to get away with it, because they're technically insisting on a school function. They had dances like this in P.E. when I went to middle school (i.e. the US in the early 00s), and this chapter demonstrates why they kinda shouldn't have. With any luck, Noel will ask Kei-chan in the room during the trip.

Speaking of dancing, getting this much for just a rehearsal is curious. What could go different enough for the actual folk dance to be this big of a deal?

To expound on the editor's note, Uesugi-kun is consistently high on the "most read" list for Ciao+ all month round, when most series drop off with a day or two of a new chapter. It also has the most likes per chapter by a significant margin. A few weeks ago, the print magazine Ciao Deluxe ended, and its last issue included the first chapter of Uesugi-kun. We'll have to see volume 1 sales to know if this is more than a "big fish, small pond" thing, but either way it's done well enough to last for a while.
