I mean, the author's accompanying text on page 30 covering the mom's inner thoughts also couldn't be more explicit if they tried.

Not really disagreeing, just pointing another interpretation. I have no doubt Mom's feelings will eventually be explicitly romantic and I just feel like at this stage she is still at the point of appreciation for Xiao-Meng's attention. Especially since she seems to be under-appreciated by her husband and son.

Also the accompanying text is by another author/writer from the same anthology and not from the author herself.

Again, not saying that it is totally not mutual. I just interpreted it differently.
