I guess this is the vibe equivalent of talking to someone who hates the label of being trans and just wants to be seen as "normal" as someone who is happy with the label, it's hard to be happy about yourself when others like you see it as a curse sometimes (in this case it's totally more understable, one being happy now gender wise not being able to talk since the other person is still internally a guy)

Rereading the story up until this chapter made me realize that it has been beautiful to see them change physically as they have growing up. Almost like watching your own child grow up, but it is also heartbreaking to see and read that they think what they are now is a punishment because whether they know it or not, they have acted, talked, and even felt more feminine then masculine. I'm not downplaying their trauma at all though, it's just sad to see.

This is kinda heartbreaking, with (formerly him) thinking this is a punishment for his past misdeeds.

That will eat him alive if it doesn't stop.

the girl he bullied probably don't even remember him. or maybe she does. i still remember my bullies
Nana probably still remembers Akira, since they were longtime childhood friends rather than just random classmates. The manga has been hinting pretty hard now in fact that talking to Nana is going to be something Akira will have to do to overcome her guilt, so we're almost certainly going to encounter her in a near future chapter.

Ah poor Akira, good to see the differing points of views (and situations) regarding this disease though. I bet Shouji also had more supportive parents. Part of Akria's feelings on her appearance is definitely influenced by her parents, they treated it like it was something shameful from the get go. I've always wondered how much of Akira's shift towards HARD femininity during her puberty was her genuine desire and how much of it was simply "I have to fit in. I have to be normal". I still think the larger part of it was the former rather than the latter, but I can't deny that it has to be at least some degree of it (especially in Japanese society)

I can appreciate it must be hard to see someone who took the opposite path and leans into their androgyny, and especially so when they're supported in that choice. Wonder if this friendship, along with the development of her telling Rumi and co about her disease, will allow her to allow herself to be a little more androgynous. Because while I feel she's happier now with her femininity, I still don't think she's gotten the correct balance bc obviously she still feels self conscious about it. (Or maybe it's just the same as trans folk, where they love their femininity but their discomfort comes from being afraid they aren't accepted as feminine by others.)

This is a good manga, opens up a lot of thoughts about the subject of gender and presentation.

Wow.
This is wild.

A “magical gender“ thing where the character just says “Nuh-uh.” and forces life back into shape.
Akira is like a sidelong almost-trans narrative.
Shouji it like an inverted one. I‘m too tired to make a deep comparison.

Point is that I want more shouji.

This is why I never had a problem with any nudity in this series.
It never felt sexualised. More “this is what this type of puberty typically does to a human body.”

The author really drags the final steps out. Akira has adapted to being female, chooses to present as female (even resisting attempts by her mother to keep presenting as male). Moreover her personality is female. IMO given her mental state, she would have resolved the male/female question years ago. But the author keeps dragging it out.

VS every other GS story I read, where "I'm a girl!" lasts about two pages, and then it's off to the rest of the isekai, power fantasy, etc. (Yes, I know different story style, but the contrast is striking.) (Okay, not "every other," e.g. GS Gyaru.)

I forget, but Akira is having periods now, right? If so, then she's fully functionally female. Although, there should be a question about chromosomes. But that has not been addressed in this magical "medical" sex change story. But assuming that's (somehow) not an issue, then she's good to go as fully functional female.

Shouji OTOH is in more difficult situation... He hasn't adjusted, and so likely has a long and difficult road ahead.

Sittin there with THAT user name, misgendering a character in a manga where the very title is explicitly about changing pronouns.
Gross.
Akira switches between pronouns herself. And when the bullying was happening she fully considered herself a boy. Even now, she hasn't fully committed to a gender yet. The title is "Until I (ore) Become me (watashi)". That level of aggression from you is completely uncalled for given such a nuanced situation. The person you replied to clearly didn't mean to misgender anyone intentionally as a sign of disrespect or otherwise. What's gross here is your holier than thou act.
