Hmm....from my personal reading experience, the cousin loses just as much or maybe even moreso than the childhood friend. For me, the two not getting together is just more of the norm.

I also like that onii-chan loved her cousin purely and without self-interest.
I also liked that the parents are real and have real issues. Dad went into slump because he lost confidence. Mom got loose because she tasted a bit of high society and flattery. It was their love as a family that brought them back to their senses. Divorce is a pain though.
