However, the child's mother in this case is itself a supernatural being, so she found a way to cheat. She brings in women to play the role of the mother and eats them, basically replenishing her life force taken by the Bojizou.

Well, being half-grey would explain why Yume can smell them. But I think Hama is really just human, which I'm more fine with than both being half-grey, as they were always one with supernatural powers and the other just trying to survive.
