I didn't realize the first time I read this, but there's this idea that telling 100 scary/ghost stories will summon some kind of supernatural beings. It's a Japanese urban legend.

Hyaku Monogatari! It's a centuries-old tradition, and I believe it has connections with Buddhism. You prepare 100 candles, tell a story, and go into the other room to snuff one out and look in a mirror. After you tell all 100, you summon a ghost or something. So instead of telling 100, it's essentially a collective game of chicken where you get to like 97 and then stop. Plenty of variations on this using sticks of incense etc. There actually used to be books of 100 ghost stories that you could buy in shops specifically so that you could memorize a few and tell them. Not all of them need to be spooky, per se, just involve the supernatural.
