Think so as well. Might even be related to the student that committed suicide. But then she also didn't smell the weird man at the gate so perhaps the ritual at the beginning (where she offered her hair) dulled her sense?

YESSS Masaaki Nakayama was my go-to as well. The doll's face from that one issue looked JUST like something he would make. The use of wide-open mouths with no teeth is also a stylistic consistency.

Anyway, about the story: I like that we started off with "it's a ghost" and then immediately pivoted to "oh no it might not just be a ghost." I wonder if that little girl shut up because the thing, whatever it was, had turned its attention to her in order to convey the message of "don't speak about me"?
