So it's a pool of water that doesn't actually rejuvenate people, it replaces them entirely with some kind of entity.

Also, I wonder how the main duo will get out of this, they obviously survive since there are more chapters and volumes after this.

This arc should have more chapters, since we haven't seen the usual ledger note at the end of each case.
I wonder what the customer-turn-her-head-on-masked-man scene was all about.

body snatchers

still doesnt explain why the employees die tho
I think it's implied that whoever was in the hood that took the water at the end was the one who was sneaking in and killing the employees when they were found. The MCs avoided that fate because they were looking out for each other (or because there was 2 of them).

That part was the detective in disguise stabbing the "customer" to get the liquid he showed the inn owner afterwards.

idk if thats really the case. the other custodians were drained while the MC who found the bad guy got hit in the head instead.

plus the granny died the same way so its pond related. but just not sure what causes the deaths as the granny and the custodians dont get cloned/sucked in

Your explanation about the black hoodie guy as the murderer of the hot spring workers makes so much sense! Thank you so much :D

A very late reply, but I think the one who’s been killing the employees are the people who got their body stolen and turned into water. She mentioned, the water smells (after it was used) and they made precautions to not touch the water as much as possible when draining it.

Previous employees might go for an easier route of going in the springs to drain it and got drowned by the person who got turned into water trying to get a body back (instead of the employees getting swapped/rejuvenated). Think of how someone drowning might drown the rescuers in the panic. This would explain the water splashing vigorously and the panel with the proprietress and water asking for help.

This would also explain how the proprietress died as well. The hooded man has left by then and her body wasn’t in a position of something drowning her, not suicide. By then she knew the water would pull her in (hasn’t been drained/cleaned) and she went to it.

Finally, my hypothesis is that prior to replacing someone, the water might be docile and that’s how the hooded man managed to get their sample. Plus, if the water was spouting like crazy I think some people might not hop in (it is not known whether the swapping occurs violently or not). The hooded man would also have been drowned while drawing water if it were vigorously pulling.
Also assuming the hooded men understood the nature of the water and swapping, they would know when to draw the right water and avoid when it’s dangerous. Though this doesn’t matter as much, them actually end up selling miracle water or getting drowned by it is not part of the story.

I wonder if the conciousness of the people lost is left behind in the used water.... well. This one hardly needs any gruesome extra details. Poor woman. Finding out her son actually died all that time ago....

"That price being the lives of the employees. Perhaps the hot spring of dreams acquired its power by consuming other people's youth."

"I see. That's a good guess, but... you're completely off."
THIS. THIS IS WHY I LIKE THIS STORY. Moments like these just make me think "Wow, does the mangaka just read the comments sections of online manga websites?" Because oh my god they knew exactly the theory everyone would have. They knew the trope that was going on. And they asked us to think a little more about it. It's a little disrespectful of theorizers, sure, but I love the introduction of this older gentleman Yagi-san as a way to show that there's also appreciation for those kinds of people in the mangaka's heart.

I love the little details the mangaka uses (think about the television comment way back during the clinical trial story), it almost gives off a Sherlock Holmes type vibe, where you're given all the clues and asked to solve the mystery before the story shows you. Why was the drain so hard to remove? Why were the bodies bloated and in the water? What was the splashing? etc. And it just all fits together so nicely by the end... God I want to play Call of Cthulhu modules based on these stories.
