Ok, so the third gray worker woman was actually using the renting service the whole time to act like she had a family?

And the MCs dodged the bullet very early on, so the only bad thing that happened was to the employers.

I guess the "horror" of this arc was the revelation that there are tons of "rentals" in the world.

It genuinely doesn't matter. But in case you need something concrete, in real life mafia/yakuza use family register of dead people to make fake id/passports and the like. Are they living yakuza-type needing family register to make fake id? are they supernatural entities needing them for a more esoteric use, say, to create new identity for themselves? It genuinely doesn't matter for the plot, it's a horror story.

Some parts shouldn't be explained like how their selves cease to exist, really they should stop doing the explaning stuff and just show. Nice plot but poorly executed.

Yeah this series will oscillate between really cool, interesting horror and wow this is kind of dumb huh depending on the arc.

And this arc does feel like on of the second kind.

Also to make it clear this isn't a bad thing IMO, it's hard to toe the line between hinting at what's going in in a thoughtprovoking way and over/under explaining the horror to the point that it's either way too clear what's going like this arc and thus not being interesting. Or so unclear it's just not possible to figure out what the horror was really meant to be, like with the vacant lot arc.

And to be fair to the series I do think that it hits the right spot more often than not.

Japanese rental families are a real thing! The author seems to look down on it, but it's a service that has value to provide to society as a whole. It's nice to have a companion for a while, I'm not sure it should be wholly villified. But! The author has made exceptionally clear where they stand on the whole "people trying to find a way out of experiencing reality" thing, and this is just an extension of that.

This 1,000%, the ambiguity makes everything creepier & more interesting

Thank you for the translation.

I like it, if they don't explain it it will be horror and confusion but if they do I also get a story.
Same. They shouldn't explain EVERYTHING obviously, but if nothing is explained then yeah it's horrific, but then I'd probably be more confused than scared. And I don't think a feeling like that is the intention.
