I mean, a scientist may understand the science behind boxing, but if they’ve never actually boxed, I doubt they could beat anyone in a fight. That said, she probably doesn’t have much combat experience and simply panicked here. Then again, that’s just my interpretation of the story.

But she's a wizard that had to graduate from Magic School and can actually cast spells. I'm pretty sure you can't graduate top of your class for magic school without actually knowing how to cast the Spells.

This is true, but we can see through her background that she is a librarian quiet girl that is from a wealthy family, she probably never fought anyone before, and when confronted she did put down her wand, i think this is more of a character problem than her skill as a magician.
