It's not like writer didn't think it wouldn't be problematic when they spent half the chapter talking about if it was the right thing to do. I think its fine.

Don't equate humans with other living beings. Or even certain human values with other human values. If you think about it, it's not that different from keeping a lock of hair.

Some of y'all are weird, or are just like, young? Shortsighted? Narrow-minded?

He explicitly discusses not being sure of how Kumatan would react to the fur, but had been considering all the while ways to bring it peace and comfort in spite of losing its mother. At the end of the day it's monster materials of an endangered creature, processed and repurposed for the benefit of the child, with them in mind, and we even get a moment of bated breath waiting to see how the baby reacts.

On the other hand, I want this dumb drama between these two grown ass adults to be resolved.

It is hard to say what is "right" or "wrong", but I suppose the reaction really depends on the animal and the context.
\
In fictional animals, for those who have watched family guy, let's not forget Brian the dog and what happened to his mother. In humans, there are historical facts with cultures of practicing cannibalizing the dead as a tradition (lookup "Kuru (Disease))". In modern cases, we have human cremated remains used in potted plans (either as a long-last memorial), fertilizers, or even sold off as test-beds for effectiveness of modern weapons. What is the "right thing" to do with the remains of the dead? And who is to judge?
\
Rimworld is probably the only game I can think of that let's the player do all that (and let the pawns celebrate said actions), but I could never do a cannibal play-through myself.
\
Personally, I find using the mother's fur absolutely abhorrent. But it is also plausible it is/was the most comforting feeling to touch for the said bear. But if said bear is sentient and recognizes it... well, be prepared to fight a bear I guess?
