  • Has to buy Ponko.
  • Has to pay her recycling fee.
  • Recycling fee is 500 yen.
  • He paid a total of 500 yen to get Ponko.
Does that mean Ponko cost basically nothing?
and I need to pay 1000 yen for throwing away a bicycle

(edit, I think I remember incorrectly)

  • Feels guilty about taking his mom away from his dad's side.
  • Decides to take the robot that his mom got away from his dad's side.
1st son's some kind of an idiot, huh? He says he feels remorseful, but just goes ahead and does something to add to that guilt.
Even if he did do it to add to the guilt (as a twisted form of penance), he's also affecting other people negatively. Completely selfish decision and overall dick move, really.

I thought the 500 yen was a relic, cause of how big it was.
And like any other historical item, it would have worth more as the time passes.

"Not good with words"?
Nonsense. He didn't even try to communicate.
He sent Ponko for termination without consulting his father.
He sent his mother to the hospital in Tokyo without consulting both his mother and father.
What a trash person.

i understand the son
You got this stubborn as fuck dad who refuses to listen or even communicate, and you've been dealing with it for 40 years.
Mom gets sick and the best bet is to send to her an actually good hospital in the city with proper equipment.

They basically are father and son, they do the exact same things.
