I think we all understand that only some extraordinary outside pressure could force this guy to change his life. Sounds simple, but work does change people that don't work. Humans adapt, and freeters are forced to accept that they can work.
The problem is, that if they were mentally healthy, they wouldn't be freeters. It's not about fitting into society, it's about them not valuing the main human traits that we need to fill normal (Independence, confidence, familiarity with places and people) over more simple and momentary like basic needs and cheap entertainment.
What I mean, is that I can more easily see this guy braking and committing suicide than accepting his reality. He's a mess, a big-big mess. For him to be able to stand of his two and withstand the world's reality he'd have to spend some ideal time adapting. And I can't believe it would happen.
