The Cruiser could potentially have been in the two panels below the point he determined as the hit, which is why I'm confused about his certainty. But, chances are I'm just overthinking it anyway, and he simply had more of a lapse in judgment. The truth is that Gakuto wouldn't dare put that cruiser literally right beside the destroyer, after all.

Edit: I actually misread which panel Lacy hit in the first place, for some reason I kept reading it as the one in the middle of the volley instead of the one underneath.

Ah, it was because he determined the possible placements to be only limited to the spaces seen here: https://mangadex.org/chapter/694488/13

But the reason he narrowed it down to that was because he assumed, as you said, that Gakuto wouldn't place ships next to each other. So he didn't have it 100% confirmed.
