Batch'll end at ~480!

I actually felt the opposite! He seemed overly relaxed by casually lying down in front of Baku. Also, why did he make it so that they're alone for 30 minutes without a referee? Souichi could've just waited elsewhere to come with the referee. One reason could be that he wanted some time alone with Baku.
His behavior is also pretty different from how he gambled vs Kidou or Voja; he seems overly talkative right now. Can't really tell if he just wants to make up for lost time with Baku, or if he's nervous as you said. Even if it's to probe Baku, it's weird for him to reveal his thoughts out loud. It could also be that, because young Hal looked up to Baku in the past, maybe he's trying to directly prove to Baku that he can keep up with him now in terms of thinking?
@Veshv
That got me thinking, in the first StL, wasn't Kyara Baku's referee? Maybe leader didn't kill him back then because he was afraid of what Kyara would do, just like in the terrorist arc. Similar to what he could be aiming for here. Though oddly enough, I don't think Kyara was ever shown in the first StL, just Yakou. Very weird now that I think about it.
I also like
@peanutskin's idea of trying to avoid Yakou. Since normally, it would be Yakou or Nowa, since they're leader's attendants. Since he proposed a way for other referees to be candidates, it could be that he wants to avoid Yakou/Nowa as referees.
To me, it seems like making them compete with each other is to get the most "determined" referee. Perhaps because this match is both special and serious to Souichi, maybe he wants the referee that can match the level of resolve that both players have?
