Two things I don't understand here, why did the referee yell at the black haired guy when it was yukiide who was complaining about kakerou, and why is yukiide's life on the line all of a sudden?

@marcyvq The referee yelled at the black-haired guy because he's a professional. A referee shouldn't be yelling at the players or insulting them, so he directed his anger at being insulted towards an acceptable target.

Yukiide's life is on the line because he bets in memories/alibis. Technically speaking, it means he now owns whatever happened on the day his opponent bet. He uses this to frame people for crimes, but in this case, he technically just "won" the crime of challenging the leader of Kakerou. He basically won Baku's crime, which means the crime is now Yukiide's, so Kakerou could claim his life instead to square up the debt.

Remember that earlier Baku asked about what would happen regarding debts and the ref said that they were included in things that could be transferred if it could be proven.

What what what?
Are they seriously trying to argue that winning somebodies MEMORIES of a date means you have to bear the burden of any debt incurredthat day?
That makes no sense.

Earlier they said kaji would have to challenge the leader for baku because baku can not gamble his life.
And now they just let him gamble his life anyway AND erase the life debt in one autistic retcon swoop?

This is the most contrived bullshit I have ever seen.
Straight up fucking garbage on paper.
This has dropped my rating for the series by a lot.

Don't worry, it will make sense later in this arc why Yukkide plays these strange bets (and how Kaji suffers for his "innocent defeat").

Also later in the Manga it is explained how the fact that Baku gets his way with the leader works and believe me, it is a reason that is very present throughout the manga (clues are given from the arc of the Hangman game but in this arc it is more noticeable)

Please, I recommend that you continue reading more!! The Tower of Karma Arc and those that follow apart from that will make you completely change your rating of this manga, many people consider these first Baku bets meh, but once you reach the TOK arc the quality and coherence improves a lot. I promise it 🤞😁😁

Are kakerou referees just thugs that decided one day to put someone they fancied in charge? Wait, I gotta read the other half of the chapter.

I mean, at this point is clear that either the writing is bs all the time or Baku had the leader by his balls from the "surpass the leader" challenge until now.

All I know is that Yuukide forfeited his right to hear everything that happened on that day fair and square. He didn't want to hear the rest of the Pooyan story, that's on him.

I'm surprised you're so angry about this outcome when I thought the last game was WAY more contrived than this (or at least could've had a better explanation).

We already established both with Kaji's gamble and with Baku asking the referee that taking the memories is essentially like taking the day itself- including things like debts. (This is important as if it was just the memory then the victim could produce physical evidence still. If they agree instead to gamble everything of that day then it means that Kakerou (within reason) has to destroy/remove the use of physical evidence).

(Again I think this could've been better explained cus even I was sort of confused until now about the exact nature of the bet).

Kaji wasn't ever going to be the one fighting the leader, Baku straight-up said he would take the Leader on and Kaji just needed to act as a front man. I'm assuming now that unaccounted variables like Kyara are involved he's changed that plan. Certainly a bit of a retcon on the author's part but by no means an ass-pull. (Again, not finished, but I think it also means Kaji won't be so tied to Baku as Baku no longer needs him to challenge the Leader. I get the decsision from a writing standpoint).

The only thing I find contrived is Baku being allowed to continue gambling with his life even after losing it. Obviously the Leader didn't actually forget Baku and is intentionally letting him live- and we also know the referees are biased to an extent (Yakou picked up the tapped pen and Kadokura intentionally let Baku omit a part of his story and not inform Yukiide about his Kakerou membership because he cheated in his other games- but still, the referees are supposed to be held to standards of fairness, and it feels sort of wonky that they would cow-tail an ironclad rule just because their leader gave up on it.

(Though, I'm still reading so there's a chance when I see more of Kakerou's workings their hierarchy and structure will become clearer).
