I’m still surprised that the hostess is getting flak.. being bi / willing to entertain yuri is a pretty popular thing with guys.. feels kind of exaggerated

To me it seems like it’s being presented as parallel to the betrayal fans have of an idol getting outed as being in a relationship. People want their illusions maintained be it in the light or dark side of the entertainment world.

That second paragraph is correct.

Don't forget that cabaret girls sell dreams. They're supposed to either be very accommodating (like Waka) or just outright untouchable (like Misa). Misa had survived thus far by maintaining her image as someone who wouldn't get involved with anyone outside of her work hours—every client accepted this as her persona.

Then, out of nowhere, pictures of her being romantically involved and with a woman at that too. That would make everyone think: did she just not want to be touched by a man? Hence the lesbian conclusion. If it were yuri eigyou/business yuri, she would do it in front of a willing audience. She hasn't done that. The pics were also from a paparazzi, meaning this was the 'real her'.

There's also the element of bi erasure, of course, although I feel that this is a lot less prominent in Japan.

I could see that angle. Maybe that’s the intended angle, it seems to fit; perhaps it’s poorly conveyed from translation loss

Rather than being lost in translation per se, I feel like it's mainly a cultural difference. It's hard to convey how characters respond to things when the characters and the readers come from very different cultural backgrounds with very different social assumptions.

But yeah, I suppose being directly exposed to the Japanese perspective like this is also part of the manga experience, lol
