It's triple pun, even more stuff to misunderstand. The moon confession thing is a genuine thing. So there's that, the misunderstood compliment, and the original statement which basically equals a "nice weather we're having today". Japanese pun misunderstandings shouldn't be surprising anymore if you have an understanding of how their written and spoken language works. It's why puns are so prevalent as part of their comedy.
