Ok first of all, the art. Masterpiece. Museum worthy (my museum that is).

Second, should've put smut tag in there because i felt feelings and the not safe for work type of feelings (a.k.a lonely). The arm and wristwatch are my weakness and thats kinda the subtle theme of this entire story

Third, if physical touch is a drawing, this entire series is it. Which also my weakness

Fourth, the conversation is the rollercoaster and oh i so enjoy the ride. Just like the author put it, everything lays in the unsaid things. My mind works overtime filling the blank.

Conclusion this manga is personally made for me to love, and i do. Bestest in the softest subtle way.

It was announced today that Udon Entertainment (with the help of Mangasplaining) licensed Veil. They’ll release it as two-in-one full color omnibuses.

So, what exactly is the setting? I assume this is central/western Europe, but what's the time period? 1900s? 1950s? 60s feels too late for this. Maybe even 19th century? As for the country, is it a generic unnamed place, or can it be identified? France is the obvious choice.

I really hope that this isn't stated later in the manga, I'm like 8 chapters in. But if it is, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to know asap.

I think it's a vague/composite/fictitious country. You catch hints of different places but they don't all fit together.

A masterpiece of art and emotion! A very slow build up of characters, background, setting, and lore. But it very much is worth it. Beautiful on so many levels

Sometime between the 1940s and early 1960s

I would say that it's Russian Empire in an alternative timeline of late 1920-s to early 1930-s.

Use of papakha is the key argument in favor of this hypothesis, also the name of the city and the names of the main characters do not contradict it either.

Upd:
Also "Сашенька" is a cutesy diminutive form of the name Alexander.
You can find this form of the name on the cover of vol.2 ch.15 under the golden papakha:

Oh my. Oh my!

In other circumstances, I would call this art style 'sloppy', or 'rushed'. But I can't help but notice that it's the world around the characters that is messy - they themselves are quite distinct, for all that the line work is just as casual as the rest of it. They stand out, and isn't that a perfectly suitable metaphor for this work of art?

No names, no complicated backstories, no real interactions with other people...this is probably best deemed 'the ultimate slice of life'. For all the roughness inherent in the art, there is a truly astonishing level of intimacy on display here. I feel very much like a voyeur, peeping in on the life of what is very clearly a comfortable couple being a couple. There's none of the ham-fisted overt slobbery kisses, gropes, or loud roars of 'feelings' that propagate through lesser manga; this is subtle. This is gentle. This is what the perfect representation of a French art film would look like when transcribed to comic medium.

I am honestly at a loss to iterate exactly how powerful this is. Each snapshot of this couple engaged and invested in the casual comfort of each other's presence is laden with unspoken intensity. It is mental lingerie; what it conceals is made all the more tantalizing and erotic than what is shown. There is a powerful impression of actual love and affection simmering just below the surface of what is being shown; from the casual cuddling under a blanket, to the clear mutual respect, to the way they continue to probe and puzzle each other out in conversation.

This is more than just romance, this is romantic. We're watching a love affair, comfortable and confident but still growing, as two people become more intertwined through the banality of life and conversation, and it exudes more eroticism than any two-bit hentai. Beyond sex, this is sexy. Oh, my word.

My first and thus far only 10/10. I don't care about the art being rough, this is fully carried by the people. Oh my.
