It wasn't really his priorities, though.
The whole deal between him and Gudrid was because Haalfdan wanted connections to Leif by having his son marry Leif's sister-in-law.

In other words: Sigurd chased Gudrid not because he wanted to, but because he couldn't disobey his father.
And we all know what happens when he disobeys his father: we get a good laugh out of it.
