@Ubergeek Scatman John was given that nickname before the term scat was changed to mean that other thing. Back in the day it was the name of an improvisational style of jazz singing. His story is actually kind of great, so I recommend reading up on him. He was a one hit wonder from America that became exceedingly popular in Japan.
