Did they just make the relationship between the three of them non-exclusive? I mean, Rin wants to get closer to her now girlfriend Hime, and Todou gave her her blessing. That means Yanagi has a clear path with Todou to be added as her third girlfriend, which seems likely to happen in the next arc of the school trip.

No. All it is is that it's okay to do things as 2 instead of always 3. Which isn't odd especially since Kurohime and Itsumi will often be just the two of them by nature of Rin being in a different school. If anything this chapter shuts down Yanagi's path as Rin made it clear how much she does not like Yanagi.

Went back and read some earlier chapters and noted that Rin and Kurohime were shown paired together in a after chapter mini drawing right after they were both introduced.

I wonder how long the idea of the three of them as a thing had been a consideration.

My bet? Ever since Kurohime started to catch harder feelings for Itsumi while Rin had solidified their relationship.

Like, you can SMELL the desire (from the author) to have them three pair up start appearing as soon as both Kurohime and Rin became decently friendly with each other. That's setting the seeds for this development to be possible.

From there it was building up Kurohime's feelings for Itsumi, and establishing more of Rin and Itsumi's change in dynamic as GFs now, to try and convince the audience that it could happen and not be a mess.

Still, RN I'm just praying that the beach episode doesn't start shit up, and it becomes an exercise in restraint from TD with Kurohime getting to be somewhat-openly possessive of her. Nothing would bring me more joy than that.

Worst part is she isn't even yandere, she has a god complex and wants to force Itsumi to praise and love her as much as everyone else does, which is why she sabotages Itsumi's life, to force her to rely upon her.

I feel a bit bad for Rin with the way her competition idea is being characterized by Toudou and Shirashiro. I think Rin's very sincerely shonen-brained about competition, very invested in the idea of being something that helps you understand yourself and others, and grow from that, with the part where you find out which of two people are better at something as nearly a tertiary aspect of it.

So like, when Toudou is saying that putting it up to a contest made her worry about how serious Rin was about their relationship, it feels wrong to me because I think it's specifically because Rin takes it seriously that she feels like she has to put it to a competition. And when Shirashiro is characterizing it as making Toudou just a prize for the victor it feels wrong, because I think to Rin it's not about creating a loser, a winner, and a prize, but a genuine belief that the way competition can make you grow and understand eachother makes it the best way to resolve this.

I don't mean to say the other girls had to be cool with the idea; that might be what competition means to Rin but that doesn't mean it has to be what it means to Toudou and Shirashiro. But I think it's kinda sad that they don't even seem to realize what this might mean to Rin.

I dunno, maybe I'm reading to much into it. I think competition is important to Rin on a deep level, but I think she also does like to win. Maybe the dating competition idea was more about the latter than the former and I'm just misunderstanding.

Even if you're completely correct about how Rin feels about competition, Rin herself neglected to consider how it made others feel. Even Toudou admits that Rin isn't the sort who thinks she'll lose. But that doesn't make the idea suddenly acceptable just because she didn't mean anything bad by it. She was pushing her own perspective on a situation that had already been settled, one that had really hurt both of the other parties already. It's no wonder both of them were so bothered by her suggestion, she was essentially re-opening a very fresh wound with a suggestion that neither liked at all. She was making Toudou into a prize, even if it's not a prize Rin thought she would ever lose.

In a nut shell, she's the reason for Tougou's insecurity and self loathing. She got like Idol level startdom or something similar, so she intentionally took all the attention from their family away from Toudou and ruined all of her friendships except Rin and her sidekick (crap I'm blaking on her name!). the only reason she's interested right now is because she accidentally (for real this time) drank some of what was left of the love potion that was originally meant to be given to Rin (ironically).

The censor bars are preserving a joke made in Japanese where Rin's dialogue was partially censored, indicating uncharacteristic rudeness. Because I wasn't 100% clear on the word she was using there I opted for the black box style censorship as opposed to something more limited.
