This might be wishful thinking, but I think there's a decent chance they're both in the same situation (in love with one another but already acting like they were rejected).

Yukari, for the reasons we already know: girl got no self-esteem. Shouko, for other reasons, maybe because she doesn't think Yukari is gay.

I have nothing to back this up, it's just a guess.

I know translation makes it harder, but her having the half spoken "Tenri" almost makes it sound like she confessed to Tenri that she is actually into her Best friend. Like the reveal will be that she is actually gay and Yukari finding that out will be a moment of her realizing she has a chance.

Basically Yukari goes from "I like a girl who loved a boy" to "I like a girl who loved a girl" so she gains hope.

I'm a fan of K-on myself so I can definitely vibe with that being a "wake up" moment, though.

There's quite a lot of subtle subversion of tropes in this chapter alone and I find it very pleasing.

Shouko's appearance fit the "small animal" type of character, but it turns out she's deeper than you'd expect having actually read some literature which surprises our MC (and in turn us readers as well).

Likewise Yukari is also subtly not your typical "introverted" character, she can actually hold a conversation once she gets comfortable! To me that's a lot closer to how real introverts operates irl compared to the usual stuttering mess for comedic effect, which btw I don't really mind, but characters like Yukari sure is refreshing.
