I know Mai very rightfully gets a ton of flak for how she acted in the first portion of the series

But Kaho legit scares me in a way none of the others do.
Kaho is by far the most ambitious, cunning, literally double-faced and amoral of the Quintet.

She is supposed to be scary, her pet rock wasn't just for show.

But she also has her own reasons and complexities to be the way she is, which IMHO makes her a very interesting character (and my personal favourite).

I will take a complex and deeply nuanced character or a shallow "nice person" or "perfect idol" any day of the week.
Which is why each of the 5 in this story are actually very good characters, from a writing and arc-progression standpoint, and why I enjoy this series so much.

She just represents facets of people I've known in life that I am thankful I no longer have to interact with, is all.
Luckily, she has those other sides of her as well to balance it all out, and the sum of Kaho isn't just what was (outwardly) on display over this last mini-run.

You said "each of the 5" so you included Mai, but I still struggle to see her as anything but a "perfect idol". Would you or anyone else please explain what else do you see in her?

I can only directly go off the manga adaptation because I'm not personally reading the novels, so I have to go off what I've heard/seen reported from other readers who have gotten further (without giving spoilers) -
While she is literally an idol of sorts (or at least an internationally recognized model), she's also "sheltered" in the sense that she just assumes she's entitled to whatever catches her fancy in the moment - which lead to the trouble around her character SAing Renako fairly early on in the series.
But she grows from there and expands her worldview and her sense of humility and temperament, and becomes less "idol-like" in that regard and more down-to-earth toward the others.

That's a very broad summation that excludes a bit of nuance and context (both to not give spoilers and also because I don't want to write a novel's worth of comment at the moment) - but she does gain complexity to her character as the narrative goes on, at least relative to where she started.

A lot of people misunderstand Mai. Because she was born into relative privilege, she feels pressure to perform to the high expectations of others. She‘s not nearly as confident as she pretends to be, and she is far from perfect. But she tries to be. She has top grades because she puts the effort in. And she is very sociable, at least in a performative capacity. Which is fine for formal events, less so for forming proper bonds with other people, whether as friends or lovers. Hence her missteps with Renako and Satsuki, but you can tell especially with her recent conversations with Ajisai that she is trying to be a better friend.

Ngl I've kind of hated watanare for a while now but the kaho arc has been a lot of fun and it's restored my faith in the series. Glory to the blue nation.
Hold on, the prior arc was Ajisai--you're saying you hated the Ajisai arc? Our angel?

The only problem I can see is that Ajisai is so obviously the best character with the best relationship to Renako that everything else ends up feeling a bit redundant.

I would never hate Maji Tenshi Ajisai. I just despise Mai and Satsuki, and the author's insistence upon their continued existence.

Has anyone pointed out that the main two colors for this series are pink and teal green? And who are the two characters with that color hair?

That's right, Kaho was the end game all along!
