I don’t approve of vigilantism in my yakuza manga either but I’m not gonna stop reading them. In fiction, there are setups used for dramatic effect with the understanding that readers will take them that way. There are probably better ways to convey uncontrollable passion but mangaka are under tight time and space constraints so I will charitably look at the work as a whole and not cancel them for a controversial chapter or arc. The general idea of Mai being a horny obsessed weirdo came across pretty well. So… ?

The story cannot gaslight me into feeling bad for Mai, I don't care if Renako actually loves her deep down a partner who'd act like Mai would be terrible to be with, when she's in "friend" mode, it's definitely fine, the confessions and saying it hurts even if it is guilt tripping are reasonable given Renako's unreasonable demand to be friends normally even after she fell in love. But her consistent disregard of her desires and boundaries in "lover" mode when one of the reasons she even fell in love was Renako admitting how much she struggled with making friends and being close to people is very disgusting, I don't really see how I'm supposed to have sympathy for her when she treats the person she "loves" this much so awfully. Wasn't this built up on understanding the other and showing care, isn't being her friend this thing she constantly addresses as being something Renako holds more dearly than anything, why is Mai going out of her way to make Renako feel distress.
