If it was only physical, Renako wouldn't have gone after Mai during the whole date hunting thing and she also wouldn't have offered her a lap pillow either. If anything, I'd say what she has for Ajisai is what that's only physical. It's reeks of virgin harem MC.
She want Mai to be her best friend, so it's obvious she would try to be close to her. A girl giving a lap pillow to a girl friend is nothing special.

Lap-pillowing Mai was specifically compared to trying to comfort her little sister, so I don’t think that makes the point you think it does.

Why not? The argument I was going for is that Renako does have affections for Mai. If Renako's attraction to Mai was purely physical, then that means she gave the lap pillow with sexual intentions, which was pretty likely not the case.

But that was already apparent from Renako’s desire to continue being friends with Mai.

I was simply pointing that the lap pillow does necessarily have romantic implications.

sorry If I misunderstood you.

I also don't think lap pillows necessarily have romantic implications. But I do think that it's reserved for people close to you. And the way I see it, Renako and Mai aren't close enough that Renako would do that for Mai if it's purely platonic from Renako's side.

Also, don't mind.

I genuinely ABHORE Mai now, she keeps barging in and knowingly interrupting Renako&Ajisai's private time, without their CONSENT of course, just walking in and not thinking of others AT ALL like always (shes not being cheated on because Renako rejected her... And Renako isnt innocent either for many reasons, and I really hoped she'd kick Mai out and finally redeem herself and this story's writing (which is sometimes very frustrating). It would have been nice to be surprised that way, though I wasnt holding out much hope of course.

Also, in the last chapter, even though Renako had said "Ajisai is #1" 10 million times before, just when shes gotten much much closer with her, and Ajisai needs her to say it, for no reason she questions it for the first time, because the author realises that yet again Ajisai is too perfect, and they need to sloppily try to still have Mai in the story: so again she breaks in.

I understand that Mai is socially akward in many ways, but I feel like the author is often pushing it too far in some chapters, but thats subjective of course...

The last few chapters before this were genuinely amazing. I know the author keeps writing in these incredibly frustrating and dumb events in this chapter and many previous ones so that eventually Renako has been with all girls & the harem can exist (&for the sake that the plot moves on). But im just a bit frustrated with the constant whiplash and I feel like it could be handled better. Also in a way to not make Mai so unlikable, as she is usually likeable and has potential (i hope the anime adaptation makes her more reasonable/likable, along with Renako).

I wont lie and say I won't still be reading, because even though these incredibly frustrating moments sometimes happen (usually to connect arcs), there is still much to enjoy in between, and the bad moment usually leads to a nicely written arc that makes me forgive it a bit, and I expect this to stay true (though I'm not so sure this time from the slight spoilers I've seen for the next few chaps). I also still very much enjoy Renako as a character growing, and of course Ajisai who was always the biggest highlight, but improved (got more fleshed out) even more in this arc. I just felt very whiplashed and disappointed this time (+bottled up emotions from the last story whiplashes) and wanted to extensively write my thoughts down (to understand why I should even bother with this story anymore... which i do now.. I think..)

Also im not trying to start any comment wars or anything... You can disagree with me, and id be interested to see why, so I can maybe see if I missed anything, but please be civil 🙂. I just like to write down EVERYTHING that im thinking, so idek if anyone is gonna read all this. I sincerely hope someone finds their opinion i this comment though.

To conclude: Ajisai deserves better

(...also to ramble a bit more about a previous chapter: Ajisai's serious dark flaw being her "selfish" reason for being nice is like... not an issue at all... she's still really nice because she wants to be. So i guess thats good but it could have been more interesting... but making her an angel is still comforting i guess. (Maybe we learn about worse flaws later though.. but the initial reveal was meh))

I just realized that Satsuki can read Rena's thoughts, while Mai can read Rena's emotions(?) when she needed to.
