It's haruna's way of cheering her sister up, and it will be shown later that she loves renako very much
Then she could at least say something: "I still love you, onee-chan" so something similar like that, can't she even do that? Insulting her sister like that, I would even call police to arrest her.

Gawd the drama is long with this one, well she probably got a trauma and its quite understandable since it's hard to heal from one

I know I'm insanely late posting here, and she didn't do anything particularly bad here, but I hate Mai so much. This chapter just made me reflect on the entire series again and I just detest her. I know the general opinion is against her anyway but I just don't understand how the author wrote her thinking she was a good love interest. She's not even a good friend.

The depression and self-loathing in this chapter was A LOT but gives much more depth and weight to the earlier chapters, which always felt slight, like they were missing a crucial element of characterization for Renako. The emptiness of Renako turning out to be a darker void is perfect. I wish it had come earlier in the plot rather than 60 chapters in but I'll take it.

To be more critical: every Mikami Teren work I read manages to break my suspension of disbelief with some of its awkward narrative choices but the sudden reveal of Kaho as the long lost childhood friend was groanworthy even by his standards. I know we'll probably get some fun out of the Kaho arc but come on author, try a little bit harder.

well when I criticized this manga during the “Mai’s terrible, no good, very bad SA case” arc for being predictably half-assed in handling its subject matter in the way of…well Mai’s attempted assault against renako, combined with the already tiresome formula of “love interest does something bad, Mc fights with them, they “break up”, Mc shoulders the blame and takes action because nobody else but the Mc can be allowed to push the plot forward no matter what, status quo is restored with zero lessons learned regardless of if the plot says otherwise.”, I certainly wasn’t expecting the story to actually give this absolute mess of a main character some real depth.

In the past I certainly wasn’t satisfied with renako’s passivity and panic induced tantrums, mainly because i was convinced the author would only treat it as a quirk to be discarded whenever plot progression needed to happen, but when as expected whenever Mai is removed from the plot renako is actually able to take charge and work towards doing what she feels is right even if every decision is clouded by her crippling self hatred and doubt, but enough about renako the rizz lord, I want to talk about the other characters in relation to her for a bit and come back to her later.

first is satsuki, I have no qualms saying I don’t think she really has any redeeming qualities, every action she has taken so far has been purely motivated by spite and even the moments she lets her guard down or tries not to be such an incorrigible jackass are instantly ruined by her seemingly obsessive need for conflict, she borders on sociopathic and if mai wasn’t in the story I’d say she’s easily the worst person (not character, person, remember that) in the cast, I don’t dislike her though, even if the things she’s said and done to renako alone are borderline irredeemable I still find her presence in the plot an interesting thing to witness and I’m praying to every god mai just gives up on renako and gets with her instead, they deserve each other.

Second is ajisai, no surprise to anyone paying attention but she’s the best character in the story by far and honestly way too good for anyone in this story, her own family included, every moment she’s on panel is adorable and so far she’s the only person that actually spurs renako to fight back against her suffocating self hatred, hell she even makes me want to be a better person, her only problem literally being that she’s too nice. additionally she’s the only cast member so far who’s inoculated against something no one else is (although due to some spoilers I saw I seriously doubt it’ll remain that way), more on that later

Maho? Kaho? Whatever the small girls name is, I have some predictions but without actually knowing anything about her yet I’m content just ignoring her here.

Now for Mai, I’ll be blunt, everything about her is horrible, she’s a constant nuisance and pretty much every line that slithers out of her mouth seems solely motivated by her desperate need to slither into renako’s pants, disregarding my previous complaints and praises of the other characters, Mai manages to make them all worse especially when it comes to their relationship with renako, every time renako is involved mai attaches herself to the situation like a tumor, constantly sucking out any air for renako to breathe and forcing herself to be center stage, hampering any attempts for renako to actually grow as a person or make any actual friends, not to mention all the ridiculously overbearing and sleazy shit she does to renako in isolation, it’s frustrating and if it weren’t for the manga’s lighthearted presentation it’d be safe to say Mai is intended to be the villain in this story, but even while writing all that I didn’t feel a hint of Malice towards her, maybe I’m being over optimistic but her and every else’s presence in the story tells me the author is trying to make everyone a character instead of a caricature, in any other story Mai would pretty much never fail except in that she’s “too nice” or “too perfect” but she like everyone else in the story has real issues that aren’t just some carefully crafted grey area that in the end only serves to try and make her seem more perfect or likeable, she’s a sex pest and an overconfident asshole, and it’s not solely played for laughs or like a little thing that doesn’t matter, it’s a real part of her identity that both helps and (mostly) hinders her, this along with the story clearly showing that renako gets along infinitely better with everyone other than her is enough for me to tolerate and even enjoy her presence from time to time, the proof is in the pudding that her own failures to respect others and act normally are preventing her from actually getting what she wants and it kills her every time this fact gets tossed in her face, I look forward to seeing how the story handles that.

Finally renako, funny story I actually thought she was a cross dressing dude when I started this manga cause I didn’t read the tags and skimmed through the first couple pages of chapter 1, based on the premise I just assumed the conflict would be that renako couldn’t because close with mai because “he” thinks mai thinks “he’s” a “she”, stupid right? Anyways renako has really caught my eye during and after the runaway arc, to keep it short I like how the author is going about displaying renako as a trainwreck of a human being, now what I dislike is how little it seems anyone else catching shit for their role in renako’s misery both within the story and without, yes renako is an indecisive, perverted, self loathing car crash of a human being, just like most teenagers, why in gods name does everyone act like it’s all her fault? At pretty much every point she has desperately tried to exert her boundaries in a respectful and agreeable way and every character besides ajisai has used that to walk all over her to their own ends, none of the current goings on are her fault at all and the one time she personally got involved in someone else’s plight of her own will it went along without incident and likely would have even without Mai’s interference, hell if anything she damn near ruined it, I won’t even mention her sister since I’m not sure what expletives I can get away with saying but what I will say is renako desperately needs some sort of guidance, an adult, a counselor, literally anything, I’m not just saying this from a “well obviously a depressed child in such extreme circumstances needs an adults wisdom” but I cannot see renako coming to any meaningful conclusions on what she’s supposed to do while she’s surrounded on all sides by these psychopaths and one girl who’s too bogged down with her own issues to reach out and set renako free, obviously she will (with mai polluting the process every step of the way) but as things are I can only see that development being both half assed and overly contrived to position Mai as the best love candidate again when she really, really doesn’t deserve it yet.

Anyway that’s all, ajisai best girl and satsuki needs her own spin-off, peace
