He's always been that in the story. He wants to protect others. I think he does have a crush on the old man but he's shown to be protective of everyone

What a screwed up world this is. On that note, there are also laws in place to prevent women from having certain types of hair accessories. They had sharp blades used as hair pins too protect themselves at one point. Those were outlawed. Misogyny apparently also works.

is actually: "We did something terrible and we were not hurt"

Also please stick closer to the actual meaning if it's written as "Yes" please don't turn it into "O-Okay..."
