Well, his dad is more a proper dad than i thought he was

Just started this series. But damn, initially thinking that the father was on the more "neglective" side after realizing how his son was living, and how we, and the protagonist, interpret his actions. But we see, he has his own perceptions and worries about his son. He genuinely cares. He's just in pain. From the loss. Perhaps he is strict with his son, but that's not a fault.

It's tough being a single dad. Even working in the States you only get around 4-5 hours of free time a night. In Japan with their work culture I can't imagine how tough it would be to manage long hours at the office and being there for your kids

Perhaps not step-mom but definitely honorary Aunt. Damn, thought it’d go into a phase where they couldn’t see each other anymore. Boy am I glad that the father and Satako just talked it over like reasonable and caring adults. That’s crazy to me. And the father gets another parent to oversee the kids without daycare win-WIn situation to me

You can sympathize with the dad but also realize he is neglecting Mashuu over his younger brother. You might be 'trying his best' but what he is doing was destroying his oldest sons life

Well, that talk should have happened on the first day instead after the trouble they went through and damage inflicted.
Satoko hiding her help with practice caused an issue with care for Mashuu younger brother and quitting the soccer club.

From the father talk, Mashuu interest seem like a sudden change and not something truly important, but even if it was something like that could grow into more than just a phase if give proper support. Not trying something new and being passive is the bigger issue when growing up.

I know it's probably not happening here, but step-mom route would be actually pretty great.
