This is the official release. Chapter 40 is out, but you have to pay to read it. Other sites that have it have published it illegally.

I don't see this chapter as an indication of romance between Satoko and Mashu. I think the author is using their conversation, and these "what if" scenarios, to explain that their bond is something that transcends labels. They clearly love each other, but their feelings aren't something that we should try to put in a box as if they simply share a mother/son bond, a friendship, or a romantic connection.

I find it fascinating that the Conveyor Belt Sushi restaurant Satoko and Mashuu went to in this chapter is of the more conventional kind that has existed since the 1960's, with the sushi pre-made and going on a conveyor belt, whereas the one they went to for their date in Volume 1 Chapter 4 was a more recent/modern, state-of-the-art kind of Conveyor Belt Sushi, with the sushi made to order and made per individual order.

Also, a bit of neat trivia: the dog shown with Mashuu in the cover page for this chapter is Hitomi Takano's own pet dog. She occasionally tweets about them on her Twitter feed and has them as her Twitter feed banner.

This is so beautiful, istg this manga makes you think hard and try to discern their relationship bc it's always evolving and it has many forms. It's kinda hard to define it which makes it interesting and not boring. And like what will the ending be??? (was kinda shook abt the title of this chapter lol)

I'm not convinced that's a fully mother-son relationship. Mostly because you wouldn't have dreamt or imagine about being at the same age. No one would want to be in the classic high school scenario unless you do some back-to-the-future scene. I felt like this mostly shows that they are always important to each other. I don't want to say romantic but not platonic ether.
