Somewhat more literally, the "pecking order" consists of nine levels going from "top of the top" (上の上) to "bottom of the bottom" (下の下). Stowie has consistently referred to himself as being "middle of the bottom" which I chose to translate to "bottom feeder" all the way back in chapter 1. Meanwhile in this chapter, Oohara is referred to as "top of the middle" which became "(kinda) near the top".

I can't say I've encountered that system very often in other stories (and thankfully, I have zero experience interacting with Japanese middle schoolers). Usually it's just リア充 (normies/extroverts) and 陰キャ (introverts/quiet kids), though.

Thx for the TL

Damn, Oohara had a moment of letting everything out. I get her moment of frustration, stowie and her are similar in dealing with their crushes, but they are in very different places in this teenager hierarchy. If I was in her position, I would be frustrated too seeing how compatiable stowie and kamoi and then hearing stowie be so self deprecating.

Oohara will come to realize that whether you are 14 or 30 once you are a loser, you always be a loser.

I went from the bottom of pecking order at 14 to the top at 15. TBH, once the novelty wears off, it's kind of upsetting having everyone treat you differently but knowing you're the same person you've always been. The main thing I took away from that is to never make decisions based on how you think people will judge you for them. Their impression of you is just that: Their impression. That's not you. So, fuck 'um.

If you don't hurt other people and try your best to be happy, you can never be a loser. :win:

I have once again been broken by the doomer mentality that is japanese teenage manga and am forced to come out of my passive consumption mode to comment as a rant. Pecking order is such a weird concept and is so ubiquitous in all these teen romance mangas. I went to a really good and fairly wealthy school so the real "pecking order" was just how smart you were. People were competitive with academic ability not some weird arbitrary concept of "place". Those who thought about a pecking order were the only ones who were bound by it. Outside of that people just hung with people of similar interests. No one was intimidated by anyone else at least not due to "position" more than disposition of mind. Moreover, people weren't solely evaluated by academic ability either, talents whether it be something you're just passionate about or something you're good at were all things that most peers considered, esp. those in your friends groups.

Most people also you know actually listened in class when taught about philosophers during the enlightment and when exposed to concepts such as "all men are equal" they actually bothered to imbibe them in their attitude as well. I guess my school was a fairly unique situation though. It also helped that class sizes were huge (200+ in one grade) and people were tracked into what they were going to study during university. So seeing these mangas where people by their own will give up rights that make them human is so bemusing and bizzarre. Anyways just another rant I wanted to blather on about for 3+ years now. Feel free to ignore and just disregard. A lot of my statements do come from my unique personal experiences so I don't hope to deride those that relate to these stories or trample the author's intent but it is disheartening. /rant

When you're as deeply ashamed of your own hobbies and interests as Stowie is, it becomes really difficult to talk to people because you feel like you can't let them know anything about you. This insecurity and shame also makes it really difficult to deal with the banter and sparring that's such an important part of communication. So, you end up putting up walls around yourself, and people end up ignoring you. There are also, of course, cases where people do end up getting bullied for having nerdy hobbies, which complicates things.

By the way, if we're relating our own middle school experiences, in 9th grade a classmate asked me "do you even know how to say things that aren't sarcastic jokes?" and after I stood there for several seconds, confused, stunlocked and dumbfounded he just laughed and went "see, you can't!"
