Yeah, I get the impression that the Demon King spent his final power restoring the Hero who, in turn, could not bring himself to return to the humans. There may have been some clues in the original Japanese that didn't translate well, but it definitely doesn't have a "double suicide" feel to it, to me.

Not to mention in the dragon chapter the demon king said that he and the the hero will be together forever. The demon king sacrificed himself to keep the hero alive
