What happened to the discord server?

No messages are visible on the server yet it says I have notifications from announcements. Looking at Reddit, others also have this problem. Allegedly someone deleted all the messages manually, is this true? If so, why?

We just did a little routine clean up of messages, that's all

If y'all just leave it completely empty like that without explanation it looks like a server admin got a Discord virus and the staff had to purge all the channels just to be safe.

Normally people don't "routinely" clean up the rules and FAQ sections by deleting everything
