I...don't get that feeling at all? I see it more as she went to college, failed out super hard(hinted at in an earlier chapter with her having terrible grades), failed to get any job prospects, had a total mental breakdown, became a hikikomori. she tried a bunch of things like changing her hair color and piercings to try to find something to give her meaning, to stand out and be different, but nothing worked and she sunk into a deep depression. and then touma came by and she's got a chance to break out, she's desperate for acceptance and to succeed at SOMETHING, but also utterly terrified to be rejected by her childhood friend and be thrown back down into the depths with nothing.

Like I GUESS it could go dark like that but that's not the vibe I feel whatsoever.
