why does the best girl has to lose tho. i know she's the side character, but I've been rooting for her all this time. and through all that, she gets nothing if not pain. rest in pieces, my ship.

What exactly do you want Ayumu to do? Lmao. All he’s been is direct with Rin when asked about his feeling and she’s taken it gracefully? This is literally one of the healthiest rejections between friends I’ve seen.
And it better be the last time he has to do this, cause it certainly has not been the first.

I did not think she added much to the manga when she was introduced and I don't really think there's much to her now either other than making Ayumu look arguably mean or insensitive.

And I don't think she was an awful character, just didn't like her role.

That being said it could have been a lot worse, at least we didn't get an awful jealousy arc out of it.

I really like Rin, she's prob the one that has grown in a more noticeable way, even if she didn't win and her role from the beginning was just to get rejected I don't regret reading all I did about her.
If we got a manga with Rin as the mc i would def read it, be it romance centered or not, I just really like how forward and honest she became once she confessed, it was a bit painful because of how great her interactions were but I think I'm okay with that precisely because of how great her interactions were.

I hope there's a spin off covering Rin and some other guy/girl. I really like her a lot.
This is ultimately the thing about how romance stories are framed: in reality this isn't the end of the world for Rin. In reality, people get rejected all the time, and "losing" here doesn't mean she'll be a spinster for the rest of her life. In practice, she will most likely be sad for a while, but once she sorts her feelings out, she'll move on and find someone else and the process will repeat.
Heck, people fall for people who are already taken all the damn time too; the human mind is messy like that. Now that she's been definitively shot down, that should help her start the process of moving on.

Yeah, personally liked her a lot but I totally see this side of it. She's only here to be a conflict to Ayumu's confession. I will say, in defense of Ayumu, he told her what he's about. She did confess and he did reject her already. And she already knew she was going to get rejected. At some point, it's on her and she also sees and understands this. But the heart wants what it wants. But, yeah, she's just here for that conflict and not much more and that's kinda on the writer.
