Why wont the pages load [Intermittent outages from extremely high traffic]

Solution
Similar issues to others in this thread. Pages load but images don't. Takes anywhere between 10 seconds and 60 seconds per image, seems to load the images in sequential order.
Using this as a lodestone to make an updated answer for the thread:

Normal website functionality with minor to severe image delays is the current expected behaviour under high site load. Previously expected behaviour until a week ago was the entire site crashing and becoming inaccessible for several hours, for comparison. Developers are continuing to work on further fixes.

I've had the same issue of the chapters list working but none of the pages loading for the past 2 days and just tried turning on Cloudflares free 1.1.1.1 DNS app and chapters instantly started loading as usual again (from never loading to pages loading within 0.5s). This was using the website on my phone (Duckduckgo browser app on an Android 14) and the 1.1.1.1 app published on the play store by Cloudflare. There is an equivalent 1.1.1.1 program you can download on Cloudflares website for desktops as well which may fix the issue for those using a PC. Can't test as I don't have access to my PC rn.

I use cloudflare as my default dns provider for every machine I own in the network config, it doesn't work either. Unless the app has a specific option not selectable or not very obvious in windows or android, that's not the problem.

I use Kiwi on mobile (because Chrome is just impossible to use because of ads and redirects on some manga sites). I've tried both on mobile. I've tried Firefox on mobile. I've even used my phone's default browser. I've tested incognito mode. Everything runs slow on mobile. Repeat on PC, same results. Worth noting that several other manga sites I use, such as mangahasu have also been running slower than normal recently, though at times, it's intermittent. My net isn't super great, but it's testing at a little over 600 mbs. I even tried turning off adblocking... Yeah, of course that made it worse! XD I also tried using my data instead of wifi (because sometimes, data loads faster) it did nothing useful.

edit: Still an issue as of 4/5/2025 though there have been a few times it sped up a little, it's mostly a lot of spinning circles (images not loading for several minutes or even if left alone for an hour+) and not much reading to be had.

I've tried clearing cookies, swapping DNS and clearing browser cache on Brave (chromium based browser), still have the same problem here :(

I even tried a VPN, with the VPN the chapters plain don't load at all for me(tried us, africa, europe and japan) while with a normal connection I just get them slowly/inconsistently(I've had multiple cases of pages 5+ loading and 1~4 not loading at all)

From @Bartolumiu in the announcement channel on the Discord:

MangaDex experienced intermittent outages starting at 15:00 UTC due to an overload of traffic, which caused a chain reaction of failures across the site. Emergency fixes have been applied, so the site should be stabilizing. However, image delivery is still extremely slow and may take a few more hours to fully recover. Expect some lingering issues with chapter loading in the meantime. We appreciate your patience while we continue monitoring the situation. Thanks for sticking with us!

As always, thanks to the devs and mods for keeping the site together!
I thought I was the only one with this problem. But good to know that it is a temporary problem. :bocchiwave:

Since this thread keeps seeing traffic....

1. Standard disclaimer that I am not a mod, or a dev, or a spokesperson, or anything else formally associated with the site (aside from sending them a few bucks each month to get my name colored purple).
2. I have a technical understanding of websites that is on roughly the same level as this guy:

3. I do follow the information that has been passed in several of the official channels (status page, Discord, etc.), and can piece that together.

Based on that information:

The intermittent page image loading issues are a known MD content delivery network (CDN) problem, and not an issue on the user side.

The devs/mods have a reasonably good idea of what the problem is, but fixing it seems like it's going to be more involved than many of the recent fixes and will likely take some time.

It really is intermittent (both from personal experience and what a number of other folks have said), so trying again later is probably the best solution on our side of things. User-side 'fixes' involving a different browser/location/facial expression/etc. do not seem to be universally successful.

In the meantime, there are a number of terrible wonderful people in the forums, so you could always make enemies friends there.

Just to point out, it's only chapter loading through the website's front end that's fucked. I threw together a quick script to download the chapter images when it was refusing to load through the website and it worked perfectly. It's less convenient than using the website, but it at least works while the website doesn't.
