Wait I'm kinda confused here. Why do brimhats want an unknowing/someone not born into magic to use forbidden magic again? To test which magic is superior or something?

@faniki If I had to guess, it's BECAUSE she is an unknowing. She's not shackled by the common sense of witches but still believes in the magic of magic. Because of this, she's both willing and likely to create 'miracles', aka breaking the status quo.

I am happy with the form of how Agathe phrased her words, she didn't put blame on Coco, she tried to diverge the brimhat focus to save herself and her friends, possibly even take the brimhat off Coco trail. And I have to say I understand to some point the pros and cons of the two sides and this brimhat motivation, I even like the bromhats more to some extent because i personally hate the ideology that permeates the current witch society, but there is no excuse to sacrifice the little ones on his quest.

The master's conflicts should be dealt between masters, and not bring disciples on that.

So Brimhats are all about selfishness. I get it. Fulfil your dreams, punish everyone else and call it justice.

I see some Star Wars parallels here. Brimhats represent the Sith in their strive for strength for.. what ever is that Siths reason and Pointy Hats represent the Jedi, law and order and really bastardy like, cold blooded decisions to preserve the "greater good". I can imaging how they started. After many fuck ups by many societies the pointy hats rebelled and somehow those terrorists won. You can't just call someone a criminal, because they have been declared so by an unjust society, can you?
They outlawed certain magic and prevented unfit people from using magic. But my guess is that the list of outlawed magic was much shorter back in the days and that you could become a "fit" person by applying for a licence, like a drivers licence and a university degree. Centuries later this freedom fighter and hippy group turned into the theocratic, bureaucratic mess we've seen so far, that protects itself and all evildoers within it, by shrouding itself in mystery. Worst part is, that I believe they are still outlawing more magic. Sure. Nations abused it, so forbid every form of advanced technology.

What I'm most curious about is how Qifrey's erratic behavior is perceived by both the Pointed and Brimhats. Because if anything it seems he has been ostracized a decent amount for being unconventional by the Pointedhats, and outright called a liar by the Brimhats in this chapter. Qifrey has done some really shady things in his quest to find a lead to the Brimhats (including using memory wiping magic on a fellow witch in an earlier chapter!!) so I'm curious on his motivations and whether him BEING at Coco's place in the first chapter was orchestrated all along... I hope Coco isn't being taken along solely for the ride as a pawn for a 3-way chess match of Qifrey vs Brimhat vs Pointedhat and has more growth, but it really seems she's stuck in that tug-of-war...

@Untramen Sounds like you've already uncovered the rest of the main plot. I would definitely not be surprised if that is what's going on.

I like how technically, Agathe only lies about two things, about the memory erasure and coco's sent back home.
And since she kept the pronoun vague, she's not even lying if there's actually someone else that got her memory erased and then sent home.

Also, making golem is an ancient, forbidden magic? Then won't Qiffrey's water dragon he demonstrates in earlier chapter also counts as one?

@mage_goo It could be the difference between a mechaniloid and Robot Master, in megaman terms. The water dragon was mainly a form, and a single purpose, while the road can follow "orders" or maybe even cast its own spells.

That, or just because it's made out of the forbidden road, ie. it's forbidden to make golems out of forbidden materials because of what spells you would need to make it happen.

That was some rock solid guts on Agathe's part though. She really is the most reckless of the bunch.

What really stuck me most about this chapter is that we
(at least on our universe and side of things)
we remember "witches" being bad and stuff...and having brimhats

Just an observation that's all

@faniki @Stissa I think it's more along the lines of 'her imagination' is broaden more than others? Because it'd be boring if it had something to do with blood... I mean at the start they said 'anyone' can use magic if taught properly...

@GruntZone360 maybe not bloodline, but actual blood; in an earlier chapter, we see the main Brimhat dealing with Coco to use her(his?) own blood to fill the double-sided ink vial, it wouldn't be far-fetched to believe that the quality of her blood + some other intangible element(perhaps imagination as you say) is some kind of super-catalyst to powerful magic.

@GruntZone360 True, I had forgotten about the dialogue where they talked about how an "outsider" might be able to break conceived barriers in magic usage.
@Frubam You might be on to something there! I would love to see some more blood magic personally. ?
