I didn't expect for the Sage to actually be bed bound, but it does explain his weird chair. Also Coco is so cute again, ungh my heart.

I love how the author captured the sense of dread and uneasiness from his sudden proposal though. It actually made me suspect he could be a brimhat posing as the sage for a moment.

I thought the same, though Bel seems earnest, if nothing else. I've always had unease about Qifrey using Coco as his "personal Brimhat magnet" too. Still, obviously, being separated from her friends would probably be bad for her psychologically and would probably hamper her ability and motivation to get better sooner. Not to mention squaring off against the Brimhats is helping her grow even faster.

He's nothing if not reasonable, but that's coming from knowing more about Qifrey than Coco does. She's only ever seen Qifrey's good side, so I'd be surprised if her answer isn't "no".

But she is a smart girl, she'll probably at least ask him to clarify why he included Qifrey as somebody she needs to be protected from.

Though damn, between the Security Council, the Brimhats, Qifrey and now Sage Beldarut, girl's got a lot of people gunning for her.

I personally think you are off the mark. I already posted my thoughts on the backstory 7 months ago in chapter 30:
Most of the medical witch were actually interested in curing illnesses and other good stuff, with only a small minority delving into the mad science stuff.
The great sages were probably the stereotypical Lawful Neutral paragons, with an overly strong sense of Order and less empathy for actual people, maybe personally hurt in some way by the evil guys.
The sage guys tried to limit (or ban) body magic, probably with good intentions (at least in their eyes), while the healers opposed the decision, for reasons as good as the sages' ones; a radicalized sect inside the healing field, as well as other witches dissatisfied with the status quo, took the chance to escalate the tension to the point of an all out war.
The survivors of the radical group are now the brimhats.

At the light of the past chapters, I'd think he is not the one that proposed the ban on body magic, since he seems to consider every magic equally important. I also think that his condition was caused by body magic by brimhats and/or could be cured with healing magic, and that would be the reason why Qifrey is so obsessed with them.
I think that Beldarunt fears that he would use Coco as a live bait, but he also truly see some potential in her (as everyone else did). I think he really care for her and that she would greatly profit from becoming his disciple, but she will obviously refuse, because of "friendship".

Refuse and go to the dark side, Coco looks so cool and cute as a brimhat... and since we all know that will never happen, I hope we can learn more of professor past.

And I hope we don't have to wait like 3 months till then...

Sage Beldarut is the epitome of characters that 1000000% resemble a High Elf and you'd immediately think of as an Elf.
