Where exactly is Maria supposed to be from? My first guess based on this chapter was that they were in Russia based on the snow and her back story as a slave (Russian serfdom was far closer to American slavery than the earlier Western European serfdom). However they bought fish and chips from a street vendor which would imply it’s Britain, but that wouldn’t make any sense either because in 16th century Britain enslaving fellow Christians was banned. Also the place she was enslaved at had an American architectural style and seemed warmer in the flashbacks. I guess it’s not supposed to be a specific country.

Yeah it's a bit of a mess of places, my thought process on where it is went like:
Architechture and bridges might be Amsterdam
Fish and chips implies UK (although you'd never get that from a street vendor, we just don't have those)
Weather implied Sweden, at least
Sleds, dogs and lakes might mean Finland
Mountains and fjord definitely Norway
So overall, it's capital E Europe. Switzerland might be a best fit, but it's definitely not lol

Also this is all fiction even most the places so to pinpoint where Maria is from doesn’t make sense. don’t overthink it and enjoy the story.

Likely Schwarzenwald (the Black Forest) in Germany. Schnitzel with frys, late 1800s-style housing, dense forest, mountainous, lots of bodies of water, and heavily impacted by deforestation.
