I recall reading that when you are walking a dog, you must make it clear to the dog that you are the one choosing the route, not the dog. Otherwise the dog will consider its social status higher than yours. If the dog dragged Makiba through the bushes, he was clearly not doing that. So, the dog would indeed look down on him.
