can't help but think the belt was a gift he got and that's why he wants to keep it as is, maybe even from Sora, i mean we have seen him restore old gear in chapter 2 when the land lady gave old gear to Sora and it was moldy and rusted and MC restored that just fine.

That whole E-rank test is bullshit. They are supposed to clear the dungeon in a limited time to rank up, but in fact it turns out their main task isn't to clear the dungeon but to guard the bloody miners. So, they are stopped from advancing at their own pace. Instead they can only advance as fast as the miners can make progress, not to mention they can't plan their actions with clearing the dungeon in mind, their every move's first priority is to ensure the miners' safety.

The adventurers' guild is a rotten organisation. We keep seeing it time after time. You'd think its purpose would be to foster adventurers necessary to deal with monsters, but its purpose seems to be to make things difficult for adventurers instead.
