Since the first part of this chapter, and the previous, used Goddamn's tavern tale as a framing device, I wonder how much of it was embellished or omitted. Nothing about Goddamn suggests he's a classic unreliable narrator, but that still doesn't mean that what we readers were shown was exactly what happened.

If your swords are cast iron (or most other metal) they're going to suck. You can do casting for bronze or copper, but for the latter you're not going to get a very effective sword at all, and for any blade bigger than a dagger casting with copper is a poor choice. Bronze is the one and only metal suitable for casting into a sword shape, but even then it's far from optimal. It's heavier, and doesn't work as well for longer blades (they're vertical moulds, not horizontal and open moulds like in movies) both of which mean you're going to have a rather short blade. There are very good reasons why every weaponsmith in our world switched from bronze to steel as soon as they had the capability of doing so.
