Usually it depends on the fantasy world but as far as I'm aware, certain religions says you'll be stripped of everything and your soul will be molded to it's base form before you are reincarnated. Hell exist because people are needed to be punished for people who have done terrible things in life but were not given punish for it when they were still living and there was a lot of that in the ancient times.

Interestingly, Hinduism has that caste system where your actions in life will be the deciding factor if you move up or down. Buddhism did originated from India so there's a few religious concepts and ideas left after it broke off from Hinduism.

If I sound offensive, I'm sorry. I just want to provide context as the soul and reincarnation is viewed differently in both western and eastern religions and a lot of pre modern philosophy are intertwined with theology.
