It's actually only because of another trope "main girl wins"Yeah, that's why I put "never" in quotation marks. It's kinda like back when people said the tsundere never wins. Same thing. People have selective memory. But also, more characters lose than win, so any character type would lose more often than they win just by statistical probability.
A lot of times, childhood friends are just tacked on for a cheap love triangle or to make it a harem (that's not a real harem by the way, since authors now have the guts to do real harems)...
And that's more because they are side characters than because them being childhood friends.
That's why I think it's a false trope... because them being childhood friends was never a factor into if they would win/lose...
