It's too big of a stretch a totally random doctor in a totally random hospital would be taken over by the demon resing in the house who knows how far away. The demon might as well take over Putin and launch a few nuclear missiles to create chaos in the world. Mako got affected directly by the old man, who was going around collecting human hearts.
