You don't want to make another one of that guy from Germany just because you failed some guy from entering art school.

"You drew exactly what I wanted you to. Therefore it's terrible and I hate it."

I'll never get the whole "what was the author/painter feeling while they did this" things. Like, how am I supposed to know? They were long since dead before I was born, and I'm no psychic. For all I know they were thinking "mmm, potatoes would be good for dinner" while they were working.

What a fucking sexist load of crap. It’s obvious you’ve never had a college-level art class. (Yeah, I know they’re not in college, but this is college prep). She’s not only normal, she’s not wrong. She’s not there to mollycoddle the students and puff up their egos, she’s there to help them get better, and they can’t do that if she’s blowing candy canes and rainbows up their asses. She praised his strong points, which is good, then told him where to focus to improve.

Oh what a load of bullshit. Not the calling out sexism part, because Japanese manga loves some shitty asshole teachers of both genders that give MC worthless or zero useful advice except "you suck and should drop out", and it's based on reality given some more autobiographic stories I've seen, but the "she's not wrong" part.

She doesn't do shit to "help them get better", and giving all of the students actual critique instead of just half of them (previous chapter) is not fucking "mollycoddling" students or "puffing their egos". Just because you're fine with the "Whiplash" method of teaching, it doesn't mean people criticizing the teacher are wrong.

I kind of agree. Especially when she said, "Also, nah it's nothing." This is not helping, if you had advice give it.

You know what, screw that art teach. So what if his art does fit your uppity attitude towards art? What emotion is there to convey with a milk carton? Let him be the hyper realistic artist he is. Not all art needs to have hidden meanings/emotions.

I graduated from art school and yes, critique sessions are exactly like that. I know this is a prep and not college, but some professors do take it a little far, and it gets to the point where it almost feels personal lol. I definitely had my fair share of pretentious professors...However, as someone who now does art professionally, it definitely does gives you a thick skin for the real world.

Go read Blue Period. Like genuinely, it's a very good manga, but it'll give you an appreciation for art and what/why it is. Or just look at a blue period Picasso and tell me that man wasn't one bad day away from jumping into the Seine.

These standard compositions are used for technical skills improvement. Not for pouring soul into them. It's like saying "I don't feel anything from this" about some technical drawing or blueprint. Yeah, there are teachers like this IRL, but that doesn't justify such attitude.

Well, considering it's Inuyama, who's amazing at drawing things he likes. For guys like him, drawing some god forsaken still life is boring to death. No wonder he only does it to check off, and prep school teacher sees it. It's best for him to drop this course alltogether, and start drawing his gf

Eh the whole point is that artists are supposed to be hyper intentional in their use of visual language to convey meaning. Like depending on how it's drawn, a hyper realistic picture can be super tense or tilt into uncanny valley or emphasize the mundane or be whimsical or ... like someone else mentioned, the reason artists do still lifes is to learn/explore how to use visual language to make something interesting when the artist can't fall back on interesting content.

For the writing analog to this kinda exercise, "The Fruit Bowl Project" by Sarah Durkee is a great little middle grade book on writing that illustrates how style shapes contents.

But, also like I agree that the instructor wasn't being constructive here. Inuyama got what she meant b/c he's feeling it too, but like having the student interrogate their intentionality would probably work better for a student who isn't getting it.
