It's common for people like this to see and read others well, but it's another thing to notice these things about themselves - you need to have a high self-esteem and enough of your own experience, be calm enough and not give a damn at least a bit, to interact with people and see the way they interact with you as clear and calm as you can when it comes to others.
In his case, he's too awkward, unsure of himself, inexperienced and what I feel is very important - anxious (or what's the antonym for indifferent?) about other people and himself, meaning he just cares too much.
Basically, it's the difference between players and good guys.
