I was heavy when I was smoking, but I certainly gained a good bit more weight when I quit - my appetite really did come back with a vengeance. Smoking really is an appetite suppressant - you can probably find ads into the '50's where that's touted as a benefit by some brands targeting women. ('Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet' comes to mind.)
