@Shamz I suspect it's a way of the spirit replenishing magic to wake up. Note that the "stone" is very clearly an egg. Given that, and the fact that the "Spirit Liberation Army" is named "Spirit Liberation Army" probably means they're trying to liberate spirits that have been turned into black stones by feeding them magic.

@shamz probably wont be any true bad guys and it will just have been so ingrained in their society that when some people (spirit liberation army) found out the truth they where seen as heretics, maybe a few of the highest nobles may know the truth but do nothing about it for one reason or another

It's Spirit Liberation Army, not Spirit Extermination Army, the spirits turn into black rock when their mana goes out and they suck all mana from anyone or surrounding area to resurrect/hatch.

People hunt and form contracts with spirits for "power up", they don't need it as Grace was already casting spells before taking a contract with a fire spirit.

If more people will take advantage of spirits that naturally give away mana, people won't cast spells and spirits eventually will turn to black stones, but this time no mana will be around.

That's what I get so far from the story to the point.

Oh man, fuck Grace (not in a good way), she either runs away or fire blasts evening around, if she didn't step in and ordered Lilly to participate the dragon wouldn't attack straight away and poor little fire spirit wouldn't sacrifice itself
